Clothes Shopping in Madrid

Madrid offers some of the best shopping in Europe! Here are a few tips to help you find just what you’re looking for:

  • For the most popular stores (Zara, H&M, and Spanish leather shoe stores like Aplauso), check out Gran Via and the smaller streets radiating out from Sol.
  • For funky vintage items, such as one of a kind bags and clothing from the 50s, try Malasaña or Lavapies
  • For high end brands like Carolina Herrera, Gucci, and Armani, Calle Serrano is just the place!
  • Finally, don’t miss one of the continent’s most famous flea markets, El Rastro, which takes place every Sunday and bank holiday in the La Latina neighborhood.

Souvenir Shopping in Madrid

The area around Sol, Plaza Mayor and Gran Vía is the hotspot for souvenir shops! That said, the majority of these shops have the most typical souvenirs so, If you are looking for something a bit different or unique, you should take a look around La Latina, where there are lots shops selling handmade items. If you are interested in Art, you could also check out the gift shops at art museums! The souvenir shops sell small ornaments of the monuments in Madrid, e.g. the bear and strawberry tree in Sol, the fountain in Plaza Cibeles etc. Another typical souvenir is the Real Madrid and Athletico Madrid merchandise, which can also be found in most souvenir shops. You will also find souvenirs which are symbolic of bullfighting: t-shirts, key rings etc. And don’t forget about the most famous Spanish souvenir – the fan!


spanish markets One of Spain’s biggest department stores is “El Corte Inglés”, where you can find everything you’ve ever dreamed of; from clothes to electronic devices to food! Although their prices may not be the cheapest, they have many stores conveniently located throughout the city. In general, Madrid offers a wide range of supermarket chains, like “Carrefour Express”, “Hipercor”, “Caprado”, “Día”, “Lidl” etc. Another big supermarket is “Mercadona”, which tends to have locations on the outskirts of Madrid and offers an extensive range of products at competitive prices.

Tip: On Sundays nearly all the shops are closed except for “El Corte Ingles” and smaller shops around la Puerta del Sol. For late nights, there is a chain called “SuperCor” which is open until 1 or 2am, as well as many convenience stores all over Madrid which are open until late at night.

Pharmacies / Drugstores in Madrid

phamarcies in madridMedication of any kind can be purchased from the local pharmacies (farmacia). There are plenty of pharmacies all over Madrid… just for a green cross (often lit up/flashing). Tip: There are pharmacies which open until late or even 24 hours a day which are called “farmacias de guardia”.



Markets in Madrid

There are several traditional markets in the center, where you can buy fresh vegetables, fruits, meat, fish, cheese etc. The main markets are: Antón Martín A small traditional market that offers high quality food from a variety of different cultures: it is situated in the colorful Lavapiés neighborhood, which is full of artistic influences.

San Miguel Situated in the barrio of La Latina, this little market is always worth a visit and offers pre-prepared tapas and snacks. If you have a short time in Madrid and want to try everything, go here first!

San Antón Located in a very trendy area of Madrid, the market San Antón offers a huge variety of fine foods and specialities of a very good quality. This market has fresh produce as well as snack bars and prepared food!

The market of Chamartín is one of the biggest markets in Madrid, and has everything you could ever need!

La Paz La Paz offers quality foods of nearly every type: they offer a wide range of delicacies and specialties.

Tip: The market “La Paz” is situated very near our school in Calle Ayala 28, near the metro Velázquez. Don’t miss the chance to stroll through its stalls after class and get some fresh fruits, vegetables, cheese and typical Spanish dishes.

Madrid Commercial Centre This market has great Chinese and Japanese food, as well as goods from South America for reasonable prices.
