Autumn Vocabulary in Spanish
To begin, it’s essential for your students to become familiar with the key words of the season. Our infographic about autumn is the perfect tool to present vocabulary in a visual and engaging manner.
In it, you will find words such as:
Las hojas: (amarillas, marrones, rojas) – The leaves
El viento: “Hace mucho viento en otoño.” – It’s very windy in autumn.
La lluvia: “Necesitamos el paraguas porque llueve.” – We need the umbrella because it’s raining.
Frutos de otoño: castañas, calabazas, uvas. – Autumn fruits: chestnuts, pumpkins, grapes.
Ropa: jersey, bufanda, botas. – Clothing: sweater, scarf, boots.
This infographic is ideal for printing and displaying in the classroom or for sharing digitally.

Grammar in Context: ¿Es Otoño or Estamos en Otoño?
One of the most common doubts among Spanish learners is the use of ser and estar. Autumn gives us the perfect excuse to clarify this difference once and for all.
Es otoño: We use the verb ser to identify or define the season. We are talking about the season as a general concept.
Example: “Mi estación favorita es el otoño.” (My favorite season is autumn.)
Estamos en otoño: We use the verb estar to indicate our temporary location within that season. It expresses a temporary situation.
Example: “¡Qué frío! Ya estamos en otoño.” (It’s so cold! We are already in autumn.)
This grammar point is a key part of our autumn Spanish lesson plan and will help your students understand the nuances of these two very important verbs.

Idioms and Expressions for the Seasons
What would Spanish be without its idiomatic expressions? We have gathered some Spanish idioms about seasons that will enrich your students’ vocabulary and bring them closer to a more natural use of the language.
Estar en el otoño de la vida: To be in the autumn of one’s life (refers to old age).
Caer la del pulpo: To get a telling-off or a beating. While not exclusive to autumn, it evokes the idea of a heavy “downpour” of criticism, much like an autumn storm.
Tiritar de frío: To shiver from the cold. A perfect expression to describe the physical sensation as temperatures drop.
Including these Spanish idioms in your fall activities for Spanish class will make your lessons much richer and more culturally insightful.

To help you put all of this into practice, we have created an activity PDF about autumn for the classroom. This downloadable material includes exercises to practice the vocabulary, the uses of ser and estar with seasons, and the idioms we’ve covered.
