Love… many of us are dealing with it, others are trying to explain it. Love is a word of great power. It can change everything, either for better or for worse. It moves around the world, puts a smile on people’s faces, but it can bring also sadness in our souls and hearts. It usually comes unexpected, but unfortunately, it can leave us even more unexpectedly. Most of us associate this word with our beloved ones, common moments of laugher, joy, and happiness. To others, love might represent pain, suffering, disappointment or sadness.

They say that love is blind and it can hurt. On one hand, it’s naive and romantic, but on the other hand, so strong and adamant. As it’s such a popular topic we’ve decided to introduce to you these Spanish love proverbs so you can also master your knowledge.

We hope you’ll find these proverbs useful and that they will help you maybe in finding your true love.  If you want to know other types of proverbs and idioms check out our alphabet of idioms which we ordered from A to M and from N to Z or Spanish idioms about positivity !

1 – De ilusión también se vive

Life is not always about “getting there” or getting what you want, but also about the dream of getting there.

Word for word the proverb says: “Of hope also one lives” which can be translated also as “hopes and dreams are what keep us going”. This Spanish saying is said to encourage us in our unrequited love and help us to make it through.

2 – Agua que no has de beber, déjala correr.

If it’s not working, let it go

The literal translation for this proverb is: “Let the water that you shouldn’t drink run” and it refers to tainted love. Most of us have experienced this wrong kind of love as well, and knew that the relationship was all bad, but we didn’t want to or weren’t able to stop it. The Spanish advice to resolve all this drama would be just to let it go!

3 -Donde hay amor, hay dolor.

When you love someone you’ll suffer pain albeit through empathy or jealousy.

This proverb literally means “Where there’s love, there’s pain” and refers to tough love,
which is the kind of love we very often want to let go. Sometimes, it may cause us too much struggle and pain in our lives, but—according to these Spanish proverbs— we should still hold on to it.

4- El tiempo lo cura todo.

Time cures everything / Time heals all wounds.

This proverb refers to love lost; we’ve all experienced broken hearts and sorrows caused by lost love, break ups or just the end of good relationships. In this case, Spanish people use this proverb to ensure that with time, everything will get better and your grief will disappear someday.

5 – El amor entra por la cocina.

The quickest way to a man’s heart is through his stomach.

As the last Spanish proverb of this series we’ve decided to choose one which is funny but very true!

This proverb literally means “Love enters through the kitchen” but has the same meaning as already mentioned English one.

There are so many words which define but can’t truly express love. Love is a feeling, energy, experience, enthusiasm, feeling of safety, passion – it’s something so abstract and so real. There is not a person who would ever want to miss out on experiencing or feeling it.

We hope that these proverbs will help you either in a question of love or your current relationship and of course that it will make you happier  Furthermore learning and knowing all these proverbs as well as using them will help you to master your Spanish.
