Spanish Autumn/Fall Vocabulary

It’s that time of year again… Autumn is officially here! It may still feel summery in sunny Málaga, but before we know it the city’s plentiful greenery will start to change into magnificent shades of red, orange and yellow. At AIL Málaga we believe in preparing our Spanish for all seasons – let’s learn some autumnal vocabulary!

 

1) Autumn colours – Los colores de otoño
Let’s start off with the basics – those autumnal colours we love so much! It wouldn’t be autumn without these colours, and your Spanish isn’t complete without them either!

 

Rojo/a – Red
Naranja – Orange
Amarillo/a – Yellow
Marrón – Brown
Ámbar – Amber
Bermellón – Maroon

 

 

2) Nature – La naturaleza

When the Spanish weather is cooling down and the scenery outside is changing, it’s the best time to get out and explore some nature! Here are the words that you’ll need to name the things you see outdoors…

 

El campo – The countryside
Los árboles – Trees
Una hoja – Leaf
Las ramas – Twigs/Sticks
El follaje – Foliage
El barro – Mud
Las castañas – Chestnuts
Una piña – Pine cone
Una bellota – Acorn

 

 

3) Autumn clothing – Ropa de otoño

Málaga enjoys pleasant temperatures all year round, but you might still want to wrap up warmer as autumn goes on! Here you can learn what’s what for autumnal clothing in Spanish…

Una camisa de manga larga – Long-sleeved shirt
Un suéter – Sweater/Jumper
El pantalón – Trousers/Pants
Una chaqueta – Jacket
Un abrigo – Coat
Las botas – Boots
Una bufanda – Scarf
Un sombrero – Hat

 

4) The weather in autumn – El tiempo en otoño

Now you know the clothes to wear in autumn… let’s make sure you can understand the weather forecast in Spanish so you always know what the day will bring and what clothes to wear!

 

¿Qué tiempo hace? – What’s the weather like?
Hace frío – It’s cold
Hace calor – It’s hot
Hace viento – It’s windy
Hace sol – It’s sunny
Hace buen tiempo – The weather is good
Hace fresco – It’s chilly
Llueve – It’s raining

 

 

5) Events and food – Eventos y comida

Autumn’s events and specialities are part of what make it such a lovely season. Do you know what they’re called in Spanish? Learn them now and you’ll never miss out!

 

Vispera del Día de Todos los Santos/Halloween – Halloween
El Día de Todos los Santos – All Saints’ Day
La Acción de Gracias – Thanksgiving
Crema de calabaza – Pumpkin soup
Una tarta de manzana – Apple pie
Los frutos secos – Nuts
Las castañas asadas – Roast chestnuts

 

 

6) Useful verbs – Verbos útiles

Autumn is a period of transition and movement – so to finish, here are the useful verbs that will help you to describe what you see or do in autumn, in Spanish!

Cambiar – To change
Calentarse – To warm up (yourself)
Dar un paseo/una caminata – To go for a walk
Pasear al perro – To walk the dog
Explorar – To explore
Caer – To fall
Sentarse junto a la chimenea- To sit by the fire
Quedarse dentro – To stay indoors
Beber una bebida caliente – To drink a hot drink
Apetecer salir fuera – To feel like going outside
