At the end of June, the streets of the capital’s city center fill with all the vibrant shades of color in the rainbow flag. The capital welcomes all visitors to immerse themselves in the atmosphere full of diversity, respect, and (above all else) fun!

This year, the Pride festivals (MADO) start this coming Friday, July 1st. As such, you can´t miss any of the great events that are going to be celebrated in the historic neighborhood of Chueca—the home of the Pride movement. You can find all of the information and learn more about Pride on their official page, but I’ll offer a summary in this post, so that you don’t miss anything.

madrid orgullo desfileThe city has a lot of events for you to go out and enjoy different festivals throughout most of the next week of July. It will not be until July 6th, however, where the official commencement of Pride starts. The speech is given in Plaza Pedro Zerolo and with this, the countdown of the most important days of MADO 2022 start.

July 7th is the craziest and most fun day, where the “High-Heel Race” happens. Watch out! Wearing platform tennis shoes will not count. Participants in the race must wear heels or platform shoes with a minimum height of 15 centimeters. I get dizzy just thinking about it! The first place winner, however, gets a 350€ prize, but I’m convinced I would not make it pass the starting line of the race…

isabel pantojaJuly 8th is the 15th edition of “Mr. Gay España”, where one of the icons of Spanish ballads, Isabel Pantoja, will be receiving an award for her support of the Pride movement. She will sing some of her most famous songs and I’m already falling in love just thinking about it all.

Mark your calendars with the brightest highlighter you have- maybe even in rainbow colors- for the date of July 9th. It all starts with the march for diversity and LGBTQ+ rights. Afterwards, the music, atmosphere, and fun come rushing in with the parade floats.

Here you´ll find some of the most important social, musical and political figures in Spain: all showing their support for the Pride movement.

This year, there is a lot of hype around the float for Chanel, the representative of the Spain in the most recent Eurovision Song Contest. Speaking of Eurovision, I’m sure you’ve also heard the iconic “Hola mi bebebé llámame llámame”. WRS (the representative of Romania at Eurovision) will also be singing his iconic Hola Mi Bebebé song and surely making the crowd feel alive. I can’t wait to record a TikTok with his song, I love it so much!

orgullo madrid chuecaThe 10th of July is the closing event of the Pride Festivals but don’t worry, there’s lots of free concerts and good vibes to enjoy throughout the day! Madrid will be feeling the fun atmosphere brought by these colorful festivals.

What do you think of the MADO 2022 Schedule? It seems fresh and exciting to me, with lots of different festivals to enjoy. Still keeping in mind, it also is a chance to re-emphasize the importance of the rights of the Pride movement that, still today, face a large amount of social and labor discrimination.

Without a doubt, I reccomend that all of our students who like to live to the fullest (like myself) check out the Pride festivals. Since you’ve already come to Madrid to study Spanish at our school, this is a great opportunity to go back home with a good grasp of the language, a more open mind, and a greater social awareness.

We’ll see you at Pride, but don’t count me in for the high heels race!

Until next time,
