What 20 Years Have Taught Us About Learning Spanish
After two decades of teaching Spanish to international students, some lessons stand out.
You don’t need to speak perfectly to start speaking
One of the biggest barriers to learning a language isn’t grammar.
It’s fear.
Fear of making a mistake. Fear of sounding silly. Fear of not understanding the answer.
The students who progress aren’t necessarily those who make the fewest mistakes.
They’re the ones who become comfortable making them.
Every imperfect conversation is practice.
Immersion changes the way you learn
There’s a big difference between studying Spanish and living in Spanish.
When you learn Spanish in Spain, the language doesn’t disappear when class finishes.
It’s on menus, street signs and supermarket shelves. It’s in the conversations happening around you. You need it to order lunch, ask a question, make plans or meet someone new.
Spanish becomes part of your day rather than something reserved for a lesson.
The people are part of the experience
Students often arrive thinking about their Spanish level.
They leave talking about people.
Their teachers. Their classmates. Their flatmates. The friends they met during an activity or over a drink after class.
Learning a language is deeply social.
And doing it alongside people from around the world can become one of the most unexpected parts of the experience.
Confidence matters more than perfection
For many students, the biggest milestone isn’t reaching a particular level.
It’s the first time they realise they’re no longer afraid to speak.
Maybe it happens in class.
Maybe it’s in a restaurant.
Maybe it’s during a conversation with someone they have just met.
But at some point, Spanish stops feeling like something they’re studying and starts feeling like a language they can actually use.
Learning Spanish has changed a lot since 2006
The world of language learning in 2026 looks very different from the one AIL entered 20 years ago.
Students can practise vocabulary on their phones, watch Spanish-language content from anywhere in the world, connect instantly with native speakers and even have conversations with AI in Spanish.
Those tools have transformed language learning.
But after 20 years, we still believe there’s something technology can’t completely recreate:
being here.
Hearing Spanish around you every day.
Discovering a new city.
Meeting people from cultures you knew very little about before.
Getting something wrong and trying again.
Realising you understood an entire conversation.
And gradually building a life in another language.
The way we learn languages will continue to evolve.
The human experience behind learning one remains remarkably powerful.
Here’s to the next 20 years
It’s strange to think that all of this started with one small classroom in Madrid.
Three friends and family members.
And one wonderfully important German student named Stephanie who had actually paid to be there.
We hope he knows what he started.
Twenty years later, students from around the world continue to arrive in Spain with their own reasons for learning Spanish and their own stories waiting to happen.
To every student who has walked through our doors, every teacher who has encouraged someone to keep speaking, every team member who has made Spain feel a little more like home and everyone who has been part of the journey:
thank you.
It feels like we’re only getting started.
Here’s to the next 20 years.
