Spring is coming! And with the sun shining, and temperatures soaring, I have the perfect way to spend the afternoon in Madrid.. in an outdoor bar! Yes, with a refreshing drink in hand and sitting outside. And if you add the possibility of admiring one of Madrid’s many fantastic views, then it’s a match made in heaven. Once the day begins to cool down, Madrid’s locals fill the rooftop bars and restaurants to enjoy the best of the city’s food and drink. So why not do as the locals do and join in on the fun! So I have done the hard work of choosing which are my top picks of the many bars in Madrid on offer, so all you need to do is sit back and relax…
My number one outdoor bar. This stylish yet relaxed hostel in the heart of the city centre, next to the Plaza Mayor, has a rooftop terrace that is definitely worth visiting. The casual décor makes you feel very at home, whilst their impressive cocktail menu offers something special for an evening of fun. They also have a tapas menu, and paella on Sundays, making it the perfect place to spend hours chatting with friends and watching the sunset. It has the down-to-earth feel of chilling in your neighbour’s garden, with a youthful, passionate, yet easy going energy from the bar and amongst the staff. A fun fact to note is that the hostel and bar are run on biomass energy, the first in Madrid to do so, making this choice guilt free as you are also helping to save the planet!
Azotea at Círculo de Bellas Artes
Located on top of Calle Alcalá, this outdoor bar has a terrace that provides the most incredible views of Madrid. It is an unbelievable venue to watch the sun set and enjoy some drinks, in a luxurious setting where you will feel like a true VIP. There is a 4-euro charge to go to the roof. However it is definitely worth it to see one of the most breath-taking views of the city – and once you get up there, you’ll want to stay all night! You don’t even have to buy a drink so if you just want to sneak a look at the beautiful Madrid skyline you can do so for this small elevator fee! With a great Mediterranean food menu also on offer, this is the perfect spot to end a busy day of shopping and exploring in style.
Have a taste of typical Madridleño living, and go where the locals go. El Viajero can be trusted to give spectacular views of old-town Madrid, as well as being beautiful on the inside. Covered in greenery and plants, this picturesque bar is ideal for getting that perfect Instagram shot, or simply for enjoying a refreshing beer whilst making new friends. Once dusk hits, this bar has some of the best cocktails you will ever try. They also offer great quality food menu, from hamburgers to classic Spanish tapas. El Viajero is always busy, whether you visit day or night, so you are guaranteed to experience a friendly, bustling atmosphere. It is not one to miss!
I hope this has made the overwhelming choice of bars in Madrid much more manageable, and you are sure to have a fantastic night whichever of these bars you choose! And one of the things I love about being a student at AIL Madrid, is thatI’m invited to ¡Fiestas with AIL!. Every Friday night, the teachers choose their favourite bars to drink and socialise with the AIL family and students. El Viajero is one of the AIL staffs’ favourite go-to locations for the party – so you can rest assured that I’ve done my research!
